Key Terms
Bleed – The bleed area is a section that extends over the finished page size, usually by around 3mm. Your background or images that run up to the edge of the page should also cover this section. Having this bleed ensures that when your finished print are cut to size there won’t be any unprinted paper along the edges
Quiet Border – An area on the inside edge of the finished size of your print usually around 3-5mm in size, that is kept free of any text or important images that do not make up the bleed. Having a quiet border will ensure that when your prints get cut to size you will not have any of your text or wanted images clipped.
RGB – A colour profile used for when designing for digital media, such as websites and digital art. This is usually set as the default profile on most design packages.
CMYK – This colour profile is standard for any artwork designed specifically for print, design for print that is done in the RGB profile will not give a true represntation of colours when printed. It is always best to design in CMYK for print as this is more accurate.
Black – For black text 12pt or smaller we recommend the colour value C0 M0 Y0 K100. For black fills and larger text, we recommend C40 M0 Y0 K100 for a ‘cool’ rich black, or C0 M40 Y0 K100 for a ‘warm’ rich black.
File Formats – For a smoother experience in our design to print process we highly recommend you save and send any artwork as a PDFx1a-2001 file, although we also accept PDF/x3 and PDF/x4 (as well as various other PDF formats for printing), please ensure all fonts are embedded for any PDF’s supplied. We also accept jpg, eps or tiff.
